Dr. Susan Elkins is Vice President of Extended Programs and Regional Development and Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Tennessee Technological University. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from TTU and did her doctoral work in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Elkins has served TTU by leading the outreach, distance learning, and service efforts in the forty-two county service area for the University since 1991. Prior to her work at Tennessee Tech, she worked with Career Development programs for high school students in various Upper Cumberland Counties and taught middle school math in the Jackson County School System.
Dr. Elkins is also a Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. Her publications and numerous presentations have focused on leadership, continuing and distance education, and student success issues such as retention and dropout prevention. She has been involved in research and service projects totaling approximately two million dollars. Dr. Elkins has spent her career of over thirty years focusing on student access and success issues in K-12 and higher education in Tennessee.
Susan has also been very active in professional and community organizations. She is a past Chair of the Association of Continuing Higher Education South Region that includes ten southern states, a position that also involved serving on the Board of Directors for the Association for Continuing Higher Education International. She is also a past president of the Tennessee Alliance of Continuing Higher Education and is a recipient of the TACHE Barbara Beeler Outstanding Service Award. She has served as a member of numerous accreditation visits for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), as well as an examiner for the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence.
From the community service perspective, Elkins is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce where she chairs the Workforce and Education Committee. She is also serving as Chair of the Genesis House Board of Directors and served as District Governor Nominee for Rotary District 6780. Susan has also previously served on the boards of WCTE-TV, the Rotary Club of Cookeville, and numerous other community organizations.
