Susan Word

Susan’s career has been packed with a wide variety of experiences in both public and private sectors ranging from military service to Fortune 500 companies, start-up companies and municipal government.

Susan served seven years in the US Army in Alabama, Virginia, West Germany and Texas as a helicopter pilot, maintenance officer and maintenance test pilot. She then embarked on her next career in the high tech industry. She moved through the ranks of semiconductor manufacturing and held positions ranging from Lead Operator to General Foreman of an electronics test facility. She was with Fortune 500 Companies (Texas Instruments and Motorola), as well as start-up companies (Ross Technology and BridgePoint Technical Manufacturing).

Susan wore two hats at BridgePoint, General Foreman and Human Resources Manager. There she not only chartered the HR department but also worked with the test engineers to develop operational electronic tests for new products.

In 2001, she decided to concentrate her efforts fully on human resources. As the Human Resources Director for the City of Pflugerville, Texas, Susan established a new HR Department. She relied on her experience in operations to develop systems and programs that focused on helping the operational departments be successful.

Susan received her Master’s degree in Human Resource Development Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 2001. She received her Senior Professional in Human Resources certification (SPHR) in June 2004.

Currently, Susan is an HR Business Operation Partner with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and teaches the SHRM Certification Prep course through Austin Community College.
