Cory Smith joined the SGR team as Senior Vice President in 2018. Cory most recently served as City Manager in Grandview, Missouri over the past 26 years until December of 2017. Prior to that, he served as Assistant City Manager in Grandview and Budget Analyst for the City of Kansas City. He also worked as a consulting engineer for Black & Veatch Engineering Co. for four years, working on municipal and private utility cost of service and rate studies and public infrastructure assessment districts.
Cory has been an ICMA member for over 40 years and is an ICMA Credentialed Manager. In recent years, he served on the ICMA Credentialing Advisory Committee for a three-year term, the ICMA Performance Management Committee for three years, and the 2017 ICMA Conference Planning Committee. He has also been a member of the Missouri City Management Association (MCMA) for nearly 40 years and been a facilitator or presenter at both MCMA and ICMA conferences. He also served as chairman of three regional municipal boards or advisory committees in association with the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and other Kansas City regional or state districts or associations. He has served as a mentor to young professionals in recent years through a MARC coaching/mentoring program. He was a member of the Kansas City South Rotary Club for 19 years and served as club president in 1999-2000.
In the past decade, Cory has been recognized with awards for Outstanding Service from the Kansas City Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration in 2008 and the Jay T. Bell Professional Management Award from the Missouri City Management Association in 2011.
Cory received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri School of Science and Technology) and a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute.
